Welcome

Please note:

I now have a newsy newsletter on all things architecture and design that comes out every other week on Fridays.

The content includes new projects completed around the world as well as what is on the boards in architects’ offices in different countries, what architectural students are doing and thinking about reflected in their projects and, as always, a vocabulary word for the day that architects use on a regular basis.

If you are interested in receiving the newsletter, you can go to my Substack website, check out my latest post and subscribe.

This is a time for young students to learn, explore, create and enjoy the process.

We offer a wide range of topics for students to choose from. Once a subject is chosen, we take them through the design process, showing them how architects work, how we draw when communicating to others and how best to show their ideas through drawings, models and the selection of building materials.

At the end of the class series, they will have designed their own project based on the topic they chose by drawing plans, elevations and possibly perspectives and creating a model and/or a materials board. All of this is done while learning more about their chosen subject whether it is Sustainable House, Airports or any other topic they want to explore.

We offer individual classes year-round and our list includes students in several countries including Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Barbados, Canada, Columbia, Pakistan, Bangkok, Puerto Rico, Malaysia, Timor, El Salvador, Germany, Spain, the Philippines, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Oman and the United States.

Please note: All classes are offered in Spanish and English.

Dora,

Just wanted to let you know Joe really enjoyed the 2 point perspective line drawing component of Tiny Houses class today. (I think that’s what he called it?) He was still drawing tonight before bed.

See you next week!

About our classes:

We offer individual classes via Zoom for students ages 8 to 16 years around the world.

Each workshop focuses on a specific topic and information is provided by way of images and discussion. Then, the information is synthesized and a solution to a specific design challenge is created by the student.

The classes are four one-hour sessions provided over a four week period Monday through Thursday and Saturdays with the exception of the Computer Drawing class which is comprised of six one hour meetings with a teacher.

The teaching we do is referred to as project-based learning and we believe the most effective way to teach young people. The student is provided with information and a challenge and using visual tools we teach, they develop a solution. The students have the opportunity to use what they have learned in their school classes in another form reinforcing the knowledge they have gained while developing their critical and creative thinking skills.

We bring into the learning experience math concepts, history, principles of sustainability and the subjects they are learning in school with complementary information. This helps to reinforce their new found knowledge with additional ideas and concepts.

The experience the student has is very similar to working in a studio environment, whether in a school of architecture or in a design firm.

The best part is that the students are having fun being creative and learning while they are processing new information.

Some of the areas of exploration that are covered during these class sessions are:

How we live: Adjacency of different building types, relationship of human activities to the organizations of towns and cities, circulation patterns and an increased awareness of our built environment.

Cultural values: What is important in different cultures and how it is expressed in built form.

History: How our building types have developed over the centuries and why.

Sustainability: What designers and architects consider when building sustainably.

Confidence in ideas: Sometimes we lose confidence in ourselves and our ideas. In these sessions, everyone’s ideas have merit and creativity is encouraged.

  1. Whoever came up with the idea of recycling shipping containers for housing purposes is/was ahead of his/her time. There are so many good reasons to salvage these strong metal boxes, then introducing them to children/people as potential building materials is/was another smart move. What a wonderful way to increase the practical choices for building materials while reusing our resources, rather than scraping the metal, or worse, simply discarding it to deteriorate with time.

    • It just allows their imagination to grow in any way they want. It shows many life lessons, like divide and conquer and to never give up. If only they could teach this at school… This is a good STEAM project for STAAR night. (exclusive in TX…) It fits in with almost all the subjects teachers WANT to teach, math, science, social studies, etc…

    • The classes are taught in the same style as in an architecture school studio and the same way a design project is approached in a firm.

In the first session we focus on the topic selected through images and discussion. During this time, the student will begin developing their own design of a building or a space. In the second class, if the student is ready to learn how to draw to scale, we take them through the process of drawing the room they are in to scale in plan and elevation. This helps them understand how to read architectural drawings.

Depending upon the design and its complexity, I might have them begin creating a model in the second half of the third session, otherwise we continue with drawings and discuss additional information that comes up in the classes. By this time, the student has asked specific questions or is interested in a subject that branches off of the topic, so between classes, I will compile the information using images or a list of websites to visit and review together. Going over the new information happens during the third  and fourth class along with other activities that are planned including drawing and model-making.

At the end of the project, the student has their design drawings, a floor plan and elevation to scale and a model or a complete set of drawings of their project.

The workshops consist of four one-hour classes with activities to do between classes. The amount of time given to assignments is based on the amount of the student’s schoolwork and the family’s schedule.

I live in Cascais, Portugal and have students in several countries as well as staff in the US and Portugal.

Usually the classes are weekly but I know with family schedules that isn’t always doable so we can be flexible in terms of dates.

The process is that you and I set a time and the days of the classes while your student selects a topic from the class description list, https://archforkids.wordpress.com/classes-offered/.

After the dates and subject are decided upon, I will send you either a request via Google Pay or an invitation through TransferWise depending upon the country you live in.

In the meantime, I set up a Basecamp site where you will have access to all class material and be updated on what is discussed during the classes. An email will be sent to you immediately with all updates from Basecamp.

I will also send you contact information if you need to reach me immediately. I have Whats App and use Facebook Messenger for this type of communication and will be notified as soon as a text or voice mail is sent

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  3. I’m amazed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s both equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. The issue is something too few folks are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy that I found this during my hunt for something relating to this.

We have lowered our fees due to the financial impact COVID is having on families. The fee now for the four one-hour sessions for one student is $175 USD or the equivalent amount in all other currencies. The fee can be paid electronically through Google Pay with a US bank account or TransferWise in all other countries. Information on how to make a transfer will be provided.

For more than one student participating in a class, the following is the fee structure:

2 students: $165 USD or the equivalent in all other currencies
3 students: $155 USD or the equivalent in all other currencies
4 students: $135 USD or the equivalent in all other currencies
